Naperville Illinois Residents Without Phone Service

Naperville Illinois Residents Without Phone Service

Hundreds of customers in Naperville, Illinois remain without telephone service after crews working on an electrical upgrade project erroneously cut three telephone cables at about Noon this past Thursday. Some will be without telephone service until Monday, according to recent estimates

Naperville, Illinois is the fourth largest city in Illinois – behind Chicago, Aurora, and Rockford. Naperville is partially in DuPage County and partially in Will County. The outage covers an area several square miles in size. The outage area is bordered by 75th Street on the South, Chicago and Maple Avenues on the north, Washington Street on the west and Greene Road on the east.

AT&T; telephone company is working around the clock on repairs. Some have had their service restored already though AT&T; phone company warns that service could remain intermittent on newly restored lines for the time being.

Cellular telephone service is unaffected by the outage. The Naperville police believe most residents affected by the current outage have access to a cellular telephone – at least through a neighbor’s service.

Naperville police are making available to elderly residents a number of wireless telephones. The Naperville Police Department’s Elderly Services Team is distributing emergency mobile phones. These phones are only able to dial 9-1-1. The phones are available to be picked up at the front desk of the Naperville Police Building at 1350 Aurora Avenue.

Naperville police are warning cell phone users that they should be prepared to give 9-1-1 operators their precise location immediately. Calls to 9-1-1 using wireless technology cannot be tracked to a precise location as easily as a land line call.

According to the Naperville City Communications Manager, the current telephone outage is the worst since the May 1988 Hinsdale fire that impacted telephone service in the western suburbs for almost a month.

The outage occurred when an unidentified contractor, drilling underneath Wehrli Road in Naperville, accidentally cut a cable around Noon on Thursday. Because the cable is underneath the roadway, traffic lanes have to be closed in order to excavate the area and make the repairs.

The City has yet to address the impact of a loss of telephone service on security systems and home medical monitoring equipment such as fetal monitors that are ordinarily tied into the telephone system. No indication has been given if anyone in the affected area is relying on any such equipment.

Naperville is located 28 miles west of downtown Chicago.…

Five Smart Ways to Use Your Smartphone

Five Smart Ways to Use Your Smartphone

Every now and then we come across an unusual way to use our smartphone. Some of these are so SMART we wish we thought of that. All of these use apps that are standard with the iPhone so you don’t have to download or pay for anything out of the ordinary.

What’s Up Doc?

How often have we gone to the doctor whether for an annual physical or more importantly for a major operation? But once the nurses or physicians start spewing out instructions about prescriptions, frequency, activity, what to do, what not to do, we nod as if we know exactly what we’re supposed to do. But the minute we walk out the door we forget what they said. Now I alert my doctor that I am going to record the instructions so I don’t forget

Car 54 Where Are You?

Have you ever been in a parking lot only to forget exactly where you parked? To avoid this vehicular faux pas I now take a photo of my car spot especially if there is a floor and pillar number to know precisely where I parked. This has become so handy the only thing I have to worry about is whether I have enough battery power to ensure I can turn on my phone when it’s time to leave.

Room Service

I now take a photo of my hotel room number whenever I’m traveling. Remembering your room number at a hotel is easy to forget. You’re so excited to reach your destination and get to the pool, theme park or event that you grab your card key only to forget the room number. So take a pic – so easy! And be sure to password protect your phone in case it gets lost or stolen!

Scene of the Accident

Recently I was in a small fender bender and remembered to whip out my iPhone to take photos of the other driver’s insurance card, drivers license, scene of the accident from various angles and the dents in both cars. I sent them to both insurance companies. Those photos proved to be useful and the other driver was found to be reckless.

Magnify

The other day I had a label that had such tiny print I could not read it. So I took a clear photo of the label then stretched the image to zoom in on the text. This tip comes in handy at restaurants to read menus or to read the back of a device that is hard to move but big enough to fit a smartphone. I know folks who also use it like a mirror by having the camera turn to do a selfie.

What other unique and handy ways have you discovered to use your smartphone?

The Growing Threat of Mobile Device Spyware and Adware

The Growing Threat of Mobile Device Spyware and Adware

Many users of smartphones, tablets and netbooks are unaware of the growing threat of mobile device spyware and adware . Most of them seem to think it is something to worry about in the future. It is not. It is here now and it is spreading fast.

One example of the growing threat of mobile device spyware and adware is Commwarrior which infects Symbian Series 60 devices, including many Nokia smartphones. Commwarrior now accounts for more than ten per cent of all of MMS traffic and telephone companies have had to develop special filters to block it.

Although the growing threat of mobile device spyware and adware exists, it is as yet nowhere near the level experienced by users of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The factors that have limited the growing threat of mobile device spyware and adware include not only the variety of operating systems and hardware but also how they are applied to mobile devices. Some device platforms are closed or limited to digitally signed software and tech companies are also developing spyware applications for mobile devices.

As well as spyware, adware developers are also now homing in on mobile devices. Bus stop advertising has been designed with a device that sends out spam messages via Bluetooth. However, this is currently only effective once the device owner accepts the message. Therefore bus stop advertising companies are now working on technology that uses software installed on mobile devices that automatically receives and displays advertising transmitted via Bluetooth. This software, which runs in the background, will eliminate the need for the user to accept the message before it is displayed. In addition, the software will collect demographic information from the mobile device owner, allowing companies to tailor their advertising to individuals.

This function of the software is likely to bring it within the industry definition of adware. Mobile device spyware and adware also include worms and Trojans on mobile platforms and in mobile devices. The growing threat of mobile device spyware and adware is a result of companies producing applications that are less and less affected by the limiting factors mentioned above.…

Nickel Allergy: Cell Phones and Facial Acute Contact Dermatitis (ACD)

Nickel Allergy: Cell Phones and Facial Acute Contact Dermatitis (ACD)

In 2008, the Canadian Medical Association Journal reported an incidence of a young man who developed acute contact dermatitis rash (ACD) on the right side of his face. He suspected the rash was caused from contact with the handset of his cell phone. The young man tested negative to sensitivity with other metals but did have a strongly positive patch test reaction to nickel. The cell phone tested positive for nickel on the headset which had come in contact with his face. He switched to a cell phone that did not test positive for nickel and the ACD cleared up. He returned to using his old phone and the rash reappeared.

Nickel allergies can occur if a person has had a single or repeated exposure to items containing nickel. According to a 2004 study, nickel sulfate is the number one most common allergen people are allergic to. An ACD rash can appear within 12-24 hours after exposure to the offending nickel contained item and can last up to 2-4 weeks. Women are typically more susceptible to nickel allergies because it is commonly used in jewelry, especially pierced earrings. It is estimated that 10-30% of the population are susceptible to nickel allergies depending upon which source is quoted.

Nickel is used in a surprisingly high number of day to day products such as belt buckles, watches, coins, door knobs and even paperclips. Often people can have a reaction to nickel this is so mild, that the nickel allergy is not suspected or easy to discern. However, continued exposure can create larger and longer reactions leading one to have the rash evaluated by a doctor.

Nickel content can be tested in any suspected metal by using a test kit that contains solutions of dimethylglyoxime and ammonium hydroxide. AllerTest Ni Nickel Detection Kit is one type of kit that can be purchased inexpensively from Amazon or dermadoctor.com. If an object contains nickel, then the solutions, when mixed together, will turn pink when rubbed onto the nickel metal in the object.

In a follow up study, to the report of the young man with the facial ACD, 22 cell phones were tested to see how prevalent nickel was on currently available cell phones. Approximately half of them tested positive for free nickel either on the keys, decorative logos or the frame around the LCD display. Phones that were more decorative versus the more rugged types were the ones that tested positive more frequently for nickel.

In October 2008, the British Association of Dermatologists sent out an alert to warn people and physicians of potential nickel allergy outbreaks after a number of cases of facial rashes appeared in Britain and were also reported in other countries connected to frequent cell phone use. Curious about the cell phone nickel content in Denmark, Danish researchers tested 41 cell phones and found that 8 or almost 20% of the phones tested positive for nickel.

Cell Phones, Manners, Life & Death

Cell Phones, Manners, Life & Death

This afternoon I drove to Sonic. I took my kids and my dog over there in the convertible to enjoy some yummy drinks. The weather was so perfect today, and it’s these type of days that I love having my convertible.

Anyway, while we were at Sonic, enjoying our drinks, some loud, obnoxious teenager decides to have a screaming fit on his cell phone. All I heard was “verbal contract,” yada yada yada, and he was using a really tough guy accent, not a Georgia sounding one at all.

My point is he was LOUD. He was disturbing our peaceful Sonic experience. I made some comment as I was driving away like, “Thanks for ruining our enjoyment of Sonic.” Of course he didn’t hear me, he was too busy yelling on his phone.

I’m really tired of cell phones. I don’t want to hear your conversation, people. I’m tired of them ringing in the middle of movie theaters, and worse, people answering them and talking at full voice. I’m tired of them interrupting church services, when I’m receiving communion. I’m tired of them ringing during orchestra rehearsals. My son said he’s tired of seeing people look at them to check messages mid conversation with someone else. My orchestra director would do that in the middle of a rehearsal. He’d be swinging his baton, and then all of the sudden pull his cell phone out of his pocket and look at it. And, if you read my prior camping article, you’ll see that’s I’m tired of hearing loudmouths chatter away at 1:00 AM in campgrounds on their phones while I’m trying to sleep.

There’s gotta be a baseline of courtesy with these things. Reading texts is not much better. Nothing like having a heavy duty conversation with someone only for them to pause to read a text from someone else.

I think it all comes down to being in the moment. If you are doing something, don’t let a cell phone interrupt you. Concentrate on that thing you are doing. Society is pushing us to multitask all aspects of our lives. This is not a good thing. No one is relaxing anymore or enjoying nice, quiet, everyday moments. Cell phones are ruining those moments.

These things, when it comes down to it, should really be used only in emergencies. I use mine from time to time to meet up with people. They are very good for that. As a rule, I don’t generally just yak on and on with the cell phone out in public. If I’m out enjoying a meal with my family at a restaurant, I don’t want my phone ringing. If it does, and if I decide to answer it, it is going to be very brief. It’s not nice to expect everyone else around you to stop what they are doing so you can have your conversation on the phone.

I think cell phones are so ubiquitous now that people have …
